Katherine works with pre-diabetic women and men with a family history of Alzheimer's to optimize their blood sugar and brain health. As an occupational therapist having worked in home health and her own mobile outpatient practice, she observed the destructive effects of diabetes on people's physical and mental health, often leading to premature cognitive decline. With a predisposition to Alzheimer's and having overcome a brain injury and insulin resistance herself, she is passionate about helping others through integrative prevention and wellness strategies. Katherine is a proud mother of two adult sons. A Louisiana native, she enjoys hiking, biking, golfing, live music and cooking for family and friends in scenic Littleton, Colorado.

My Story

Soon after transitioning to a second career in healthcare as an occupational therapist, I experienced a traumatic brain injury (TBI) as a result of a motor vehicle accident. My cognition, speech, vision and memory were all affected in addition to having left neglect and facial nerve damage. I lost the capacity to add even single digit numbers and couldn't draw a cube if you put one in front of me. I had ocular and autonomic dysfunction and struggled with a highly dysregulated nervous system.

Seven months later, I moved from California to the high elevation of Colorado which exacerbated my symptoms, limiting my capacity to work and engage in things I enjoyed most. I discovered that the ongoing autonomic dysfunction had been waging a silent war on my body and was now leading to insulin resistance. I was shocked. I had been strictly following an anti-inflammatory diet since the accident. I was terrified of developing diabetes and the cascade of physical and cognitive conditions that come with it as I’d witnessed with many of the patients I served. I started researching how these seemingly separate body systems influenced one another and worked with my functional neurologist to develop a game plan that required me to go much deeper than my food intake and outside of any help he could offer me.

I came to learn that insulin resistance can be reversed through lifestyle modifications, without the use of medications. For me, identifying and addressing unhealthy stressors was the ultimate catalyst in turning things around. Optimizing my blood sugar and brain health through a combination of strategies and prioritizing myself became non-negotiable. The changes I chose to make were difficult, with rippling effects across both my family and work life but the growth and healing I experienced through them were life giving.

While I still manage some lingering issues from the brain injury, insulin resistance is not one of them. My physical and cognitive resilience is as good as ever and I no longer worry about my future health, despite having both an Alzheimer’s gene and brain injury.

Having a support partner with knowledge and experience is powerful. With some trial and error and mindset shifts, anyone can change the trajectory of their health and develop the habits to maintain wellness well into your best years.

After the loss of my parents and beginning a new job, my daily routine experienced major upheaval. My A1c was steadily increasing and I didn't understand why as I hadn't changed what I was eating. After working with Katherine, I was able to bring my A1c down from 10.3 to 7.6 in under 6 months. She showed me it wasn't just about what I was eating but also about my stress, when and in what order I was eating, new approaches to exercise in addition to supplements tailored to my specific genetics and conditions. Several small changes to my daily routine helped me stabilize my blood sugar. The best part about working with Katherine is the fact that her approach is personalized. She will look at your personal issues and needs rather than a cookie cutter approach to general health problems. The one-on-one experience you will receive is something to be treasured. It isn't often that practitioners will take more than five minutes to listen to your problems, much less sit down with you and get to the root of your issues and design a game plan that will work specifically for you.

I started working with Katherine after receiving alarming results at a doctor's visit. My A1c was 9.2 and my doctor told me I had 3 months to get these labs cleaned up or she was putting me on medication for diabetes. Through diet, exercise and close monitoring of my blood sugar, Katherine helped me get my A1c down to 5.5 in less than 3 months. Since we started working together, I've lost over 45 lbs. in a year. I haven't been this weight since college. I noticed other benefits as well: clearer skin, reduced snoring, more energy, no more reflux along with a better understanding of what foods I should be eating. The best thing I learned from Katherine is that you can improve your health with dedication and lifestyle adjustments, not just taking medication. I highly recommend working with Katherine as she is extremely knowledgeable and you can get optimal results if you follow her guidance.
